Emily Wickersham

It was pure joy catching with one of our favorite Bare muses Emily Wickersham. Last we saw her she’d just had her baby boy Cassius and she was brunette with bangs. On this visit Emily was looking chic in a newly chopped blond bob and killing it at her most important role as a momma. Be sure to check out her new Substack called “WHY NOT “ which you can check out HERE. The Bare Magazine: It was wonderful to reunite - we could make a habit of it! last we shot you had long brown hair with bangs. are you loving your new blonde bob? is this the shortest you've ever had? who colored and chopped?

Emily Wickersham: Tina, I always love seeing you! It’s the best! Yeah, last time you saw me I had completely different hair! I think after having a child I went through a little bit of identity crisis, a good one, but definitely trying to figure it all out and maybe part of that was changing my hair?

I’m really happy to be back to blonde. I feel so much more myself being a blonde.

I got it done by the very talented Ashley Javier. He has such a wonderful eye and has a great idea about a look on a person. He convinced me to go shorter. Though I also wanted to. I wanted a changed. But I’ve always been scared to go this short for some reason. I don’t know, people get attached to their hair. I’ve always been a long haired girl. And after going through pregnancy, the biggest change in my life , I thought I might as well keep the ball rolling. I don’t know if I’ll keep it shorter forever, but I do really love it. Somehow I feel taller with short hair so I’m really into that. And the thing about hair is… it grows.

Bare: We got a peek at your extensive wardrobe...it's such an eclectic mix! what are a few of your most treasured items and why? do you still love a good vintage find?

EW: Well, unfortunately for me I’m a big shopper. I’ve always loved clothes and I’ve always loved collecting them. I love the hunt for a vintage piece. I’d say some of my most treasured items are probably items that my grandmother gave to me or I got after she died. They kind of still smell like her to me and even if I don’t wear them all the time they make me happy when I look at them in my closet or when I wrap myself up in them and inhale. It’s kind of comforting to me.

I also really love my vintage Levi collection. It’s pretty extensive. I wear jeans all the time. And definitely have way too many old Levi’s. But i kinda feel like can you have too many?

Bare: Speaking of fashion...you mentioned you were asked to be Doen ambassador - are you enjoying that? what do you love about their clothing?

EW: I was asked to be a Doen ambassador recently. I was honored and flattered. Their clothing is very feminine, which is not necessarily my normal style, but I love it all so much and I found that I like to mix it with a lot of my more masculine pieces to make it more my own. There’s some thing kind of magical and whimsical about the way their clothes are worn and the way you feel in them. I think it’s just that like very feminine touch that they have whether it be like a sweater with a little kind of slightly puff sleeve, or a long, beautiful floral dress. Whatever it is it’s just feels so effortless and feminine.

Bare: Switching to your luminous skin ...can you share any skin challenges and solutions as you near 40 and since having a baby?

EW: Oh my gosh yes I am nearly 40 … I don’t know it’s wild to me, but here we are. Aging, it’s inevitable. What I’ve noticed about my skin after having a child and getting closer to 40 is that my skin isn’t as thick as it once was on my face. So I really try to focus on things that will thicken that up as much as possible. I love getting facials. I go to Lena at Carasoin in LA and Lisa Shannon in NY. Both are very clean. I have very sensitive skin so I can really only use super clean products on my skin. I’ve done some lasers… which I’m on the fence about. I think the thing I see the most change with is microneedling. I love it. As I’m writing this I’m also thinking even though it’s late fall I should continue to put my sunscreen on…which I haven’t been doing. So thank you for asking this question! Overall, I’ve noticed how sensitive I am to food and alcohol and no sleep. It all shows on my skin. So now, more than ever try to stay as much ahead of it as I can. I definitely fall short most days. What can ya do! You gotta live!

Bare: Any tips on getting your eyebrows looking so lush and feathery?

EW: Kristie Streicher. She’s just the best of the best.

Since I’ve moved back to NY, I really don’t touch my brows much. I’ve seen William Scott here and he’s great. He keeps them thick which is key for me. He’s also a super talented makeup artist btw.

But I had been going to Striiike for so many years I kinda try to wait til I can see Kristie or Maggie over there in La. I like them to be as thick and feathery as possible, which is their MO.

Bare: Do you like to go makeup free when possible? when you do put on some makeup what do you reach for?

EW: I try to go make up free as much as I can. I have the type of skin where, though I need make up for redness and spots, I feel that make up doesn’t necessarily sit well on my skin. And sometimes it kind of can make me look older. So I really try to use as minimal make up as possible, but definitely as the years go by I for sure need some help. I really love Cle de Peau concealer, Ilia mascara, Jones Road moisture tint, RMS luminizer, and an Ogee lip tint. I’m into at the moment. I try to keep it simple.

Bare: What is your favorite self care ritual?

EW: Well, I would say right now self-care is few and far between with a child LOL.

BUT I love getting myself a massage to unwind, or a lymphatic drainage, and a facial. Those are things I do when I treat myself. But daily or nightly i guess, i take everything off my face and do some red light and then put all my products on (mostly environ right now topped with Carasoin moisturizer) and do a long facial massage. Water, lots of water. Start my day or end my day. That’s kinda the routine.
