Cailee Spaeny & Raymond Cham Jr.

Super talented partners Cailee Spaeny and Raymond Cham Jr. were a joy to hang with at our Brooklyn studio recently. They are truly couple/style goals, with an easy going warmth and creative, compelling energy. We can’t wait to catch Cailee in “How It Ends” a serene apocalyptic comedy from partners Zoe Lister-Jones and Daryl Wein. It will be available on all digital platforms July 20th in the US. The multi-talented Raymond is currently in production on the ballet-themed dramedy “The Big Leap,” which will debut this fall on FOX. The dynamic duo give us the lowdown on their love of hand-me-downs, vintage, inspirations and the fashion trend they regret participating in.

The Bare Magazine: How would you describe your personal style?

Cailee Spaeny: Raymond has said my style is eclectic which I think sums it up. I keep it pretty thrifty so MOST of my closet is made up from some hand me downs from my family, vintage finds, things friends have let me keep after staying over at their place, and I also have a handful of lovely gifted pieces. I’m slowly starting to invest in some classic staples that I’ll have forever.

Raymond Cham Jr.: I don’t know. Some days I try really hard to look cool and then I look trash. Other days I don’t try at all and I look alright and then I try again and then I look cool. There’s no consistency hahaha. I want to have a uniform like Steve Jobs. Or Fran lebowitz. Or Wes Anderson.  They built an archetype and it’s full proof.

Bare: How has your style evolved since your younger years? What are your wardrobe staples?

RCJ: I just tried to dress like people around me and it’s embarrassing to look back on. I still try to dress like some people but at least they’re cooler now.

Wardrobe staples: Denim jeans, simple shirt, and a jacket. Boring I guess.

Bare: How would you say you have influenced each other's style since you've been a couple?

CS: I steal most of his vintage tees. He has a pretty impressive collection. I feel like I helped raymond get in touch with his feminine side a bit. He gets his nails done with me now and he’s HOOKED.

RCJ: Well, she likes soft boys so I’ve been in touch with my softer side. Hahahaha. It’s true though. I’m trying to look pretty too now.

Bare: Where are your favorite places to shop? Do you love discovering great vintage?

CS: Yes definitely. For NY I would recommend Raggedy Threads and LA, check out Squaresville! So much fun. Also saved me when I was auditioning non stop and I need cute but CHEAP outfits for different characters.

RCJ: I just went off at this store called The Cure. It’s a thrift shop in NYC and they were changing locations so they had a huge sale and it was awesome. Yeah, I love vintage & hand-me-downs. I have a few shirts and things that I’ve straight up stolen from friends and they’re always the pieces people compliment the most. Just the lineage of a piece is fun.

Bare: When you are filming a project does your character's personality and style seep into your real life?

CS: For sure. After I did Devs, where I played a male and chopped all my hair off. It was fun to play around with a more androgynous look.

RCJ: Not really. I’ve never really liked my character’s style for my own.

Bare: Have either of you ever participated in a fashion trend that you can't believe you sported?

CS: Okay… do you remember the leggings that had a denim jean PRINT on it? Like a button and zipper that was completely PRINTED and not functional whatsoever?!? Whyyyy? I did participate though.

RCJ: Skinny jeans. I hated them then and I still wore them which is just ridiculous.
