Iris Apatow

Super beauty and talent Iris Apatow stars alongside a stellar comedic cast, including her mother Leslie Mann, in Judd Apatow’s first streaming film for Netflix, “The Bubble.” On a night when you feel the need for a good laugh and escape, this is the ticket. A group of actors are caught inside a pandemic bubble trying to make a film which involves dinosaurs, wild action/adventure and of course many Covid tests. We watch as some of the other great cast members — Fred Armisen, Maria Bakalova, David Duchovny, Karen Gillan, Kate McKinnon and Pedro Pascal start to go slightly bonkers. We had a blast discovering Iris’s cool personal style, side passions, love of knitting and favorite brown lip pencil. Hope you’ll enjoy jumping in our bare bubble with this fine lady.

The Bare Magazine: How was it playing an actor in a movie inside of a movie?

Iris Apatow: It was very exciting to play an actor in a movie inside of a movie in The Bubble because I got to play with each of the characters I was portraying.

Bare: With a heavy blanket of Covid restrictions and themes on set, was it helpful you were making a comedy? Were you able to film without shut-downs?

IA: It was definitely helpful that we were filming a comedy during Covid. We were fortunate enough to have no positive tests on set, so we did not have to shut down.

Bare: When filming a comedy do you find it hard to stay in character at times... or does everyone take a laugh break when necessary?

IA: I had a very hard time not breaking character especially with Fred Armisen.

Bare: What did you like about your character Krystal? Would she be someone you'd hang with?

IA: I think my character Krystal could be someone I would connect with in real life because I know she has a good heart.

Bare: Besides your parents Leslie Mann and Judd Apatow who did you hang/connect with most in The Bubble cast?

IA: Maria [Bakalova], Danielle [Vitalis] and Harry [Trevaldywn] were like my babysitters on the set of The Bubble. They were so kind and made work so enjoyable.

Bare: You're interested in filmmaking - can you share why you're drawn to it and to storytelling? Do you feel you can learn a lot about yourself through it?

IA: I have always written short stories, since I was a little girl. As I have grown older, I have been playing with making short films and am getting a great education on the process in college this year.

Bare: Can you tell us a bit about your passion for painting faces and creating special effects? Do you love the process and transformation? Getting into character?

IA: I took a special FX course during my first semester of college, and it was the most fun I have had in years. I think it is very therapeutic and it is a great way to express yourself.

Bare: What kind of role/genre you'd like to dive into next - is there a certain era you are drawn to?

IA: I have always taken extreme interest in horror. It has always been a dream of mine to play very dramatic and scary roles.

Bare: You are a bit of a knitter. Have you knitted anything cool lately...or is it something you mostly do on sets while you hurry up and wait?

IA: I knit whenever I can; it brings me so much happiness that I would do it all day if I could. I am currently knitting Winnie the Pooh.

Bare: Finally what are your top 5 Bare essentials - they can be anything.

IA: My top 5 Bare essentials are:

  • MAC Spice, a brown lip liner

  • Fenty red lipstick

  • Hair rollers

  • Lancome mascara

  • My mom’s Dingo boots from the 90s
