The Bare Magazine: have you always embraced your curls?

Joanna Vargas: Not at all! I think sometimes you have to grow into you what makes you unique and for me curly hair didn’t seem very desirable growing up. I didn’t see many images in ads or magazines of women like me and I’m sure that didn’t help. I think it took till college to truly embrace it.

Bare: has your husband mentioned your hair as being one of the first things that attracted him to you?

JV: Definitely. He apparently has a thing for red curly hair.

Bare: just as using the right products to target specific skin types...do you think same goes for your hair? what regime have you found most effective?

JV: My routine for my hair is sacred. I only use Harkliniken products. At night I use their custom scalp serum because it makes your hair grow healthy, fast and full. It also really helped restore my curl pattern after years of damaging my hair with processing and products that didn’t work for me. In the am I shampoo with their Balancing shampoo and rinse out conditioner. And I put a little leave in conditioner to define my curls.

Bare: do you have a favorite curly haired icon?

JV: I mean, our dear friend Keri Russell is the best curly haired icon ever! Besides her, I’d have to say Andre MacDowall.

Bare: do you have a preferred hairdresser you go to for trims/color?

JV: For color I only go to Jules Fortiz at Jenna Perry Hair. Jenna has an amazing salon and everyone there is so talented. But Jules always nurtures my hair and getting my color touched up feels like a spa day to me.

Bare: does having a good hair day feel similar to a good skin day in the way it effects your confidence and spirit?

JV: Absolutely! Having your mane in check is the best! My favorite hair is just me long and curly.
