Lela Loren

Lela Loren is a stylish, kind, naturally beautiful talent that stars in Altered Carbon, Season 2 now streaming on Netflix. We were thrilled when we got a chance to have her in The Bare NYC studio while in the midst of numerous press engagements. She was in great spirits, ready to dance around to some of her favorite tunes, displaying her amazing taste in clothes and her incredibly glowing skin! She was clearly excited to share this latest piece of her excellent body of work.

The Bare Magazine: Given the intensity of your character, Danica Harlan, are you relieved you were finished with her after one season? Can you also share your process, diving in and then releasing her? Are there any similarities in your traits?

Lela Loren: I found Danica quite fun to play because she’s so different than me. And I was actually sad to see her go, at the same time I was happy to get to come back home. I think the intensity for me had more to do with being on location away from my friends and routine.  Taking off her wardrobe was all it took to release her.  As soon as I put on my tennis shoes, she evaporated.  In terms of diving into her, I start with curiosity and build from there.

Bare: What are you hoping a person might come away with after binging on Altered Carbon?

LL: I hope that they come away questioning if the fantasy of living forever is really worth it, and I hope we’ve left them wanting more.

Bare: Are you ready for a different genre, perhaps lighter, maybe a comedy? Do you also enjoy the stage?

LL: I’m open to anything with a  good story and good characters, but I would love to do a comedy. And yes, I love the stage.  It’s been far too long since I’ve been on one.

Bare: We loved your taste in music while we danced around the studio. Tell us about your eclectic taste? When are you most likely to turn on a certain type of music? What's on repeat lately?

LL: My taste changes all the time depending on my mood, and mostly the music I know has come from friends and family sharing it through the years. In the morning I have the ritual of putting on Claude Debussy and Erik Satie and making coffee. One of my dearest friends from Argentina would do that every morning when she made maté, and It was so peaceful that I had to have it in my life and it reminds me of her.  Currently the song I have on repeat is “Feel it Still” by Portugal.  The Man.

Bare: We also loved your sense of style. Do you have a range from tomboy to fancy? Who are some of your current favorite designers and go-to shops?

LL: On my time off, I like to go full tomboy. Boyfriend jeans, sweats, an old t-shirt. I like being bare; anything I won’t mind getting dirty if I work in the garden. But my feminine side is real; and is more like our shoot— I love a good cotton summer dress. Again, it depends how I feel, but generally I go for the feeling of effortlessness.

Bare: What kind of imagery, messages, and conversation would you like to see more of on the social network?

LL: I always love posts where people are digging for the truth and authenticity... whether it’s in their humor, or their art, or in opening up their life. One of my favorites at the moment is @bymariandrew.

Bare: As you evolve are there some life lessons you could share that have become more relevant and clear to you? Have priorities or goals shifted?

LL: This may sound strange, but one of the biggest counterintuitive life lessons I’m still learning is to let go of this idea of goals and “getting somewhere.”  All the goals I had thought I wanted pale in comparison to the beautiful accidents that have happened along the way and how my life has unfolded.  And all the days that seemed wasted or like I was stuck were all in preparation for things I couldn’t know were coming.
