Milo Manheim

Milo Manheim makes his New York Off Broadway musical debut playing Seymour, a flower shop attendant in the hit rock horror revival of Little Shop of Horrors. They've just extended the run till June 1st so grab your seats if you haven't experienced this fun, fantastical, creepy, musical ride. We met up with Milo before a show at his NYC pad, where he played guitar on the balcony and gave us a peek into his great personal style. We tagged along on his daily stroll to the Westside Theatre, stopping at a few of his favorite spots along the way. We headed to his dressing room where he filled us in on everything from bloodthirsty plants, his bare essentials, music inspiration, to his favorite snack and what quality he’d like most in a partner. So scroll on down and get to know this super gifted vibrant star on the rise.

The Bare Magazine: what are some of your favorite parts and messages in Little Shop of Horrors the viewer can expect to take in?

Milo Manheim: I love how absurd the show is while being so timeless. Maybe it's improbable that the world gets taken over by bloodthirsty plants, but I think the real message is that human greed might be our demise and we should take care of our planet.

Bare: please share what you have enjoyed most about your Little Shop of Horrors experience and what have you learned from it?

MM: I have loved working alongside such fantastic people. I feel like I'm learning from the best. On top of that, everyone's shared passion for the show is infectious. There are no songs I'm getting sick of which is a crazy thing to say.

Bare: you play a bit of guitar....thanks for the led zeppelin sounding serenade! when you have time to play does it help you unwind and relax? what are your top ways to recharge?

MM: The first thing I did when I got to NY was buy a guitar. It seems to solve everything for me. Anxious? Play some guitar to cool off. Need energy? Play some guitar to wake up. Need to vent about something on my mind? Write a quick little shitty song about it nobody will hear and I'll probably forget tomorrow. I had a teacher once assign me homework to play 20 mins of guitar each night and I really haven't stopped. Thanks Tom. (Waits)

Bare: it was fun following you on your daily stroll to the theatre. what's your usual show day routine and favorite places to stop in on your walk over?

MM: I feel like most of the work happens outside of the theater. On stage you can go crazy, off stage you need some discipline. I wake up, warm up my voice for 20 mins then try to shut up for the rest of the day until the show. On my walk to the theater, if I'm feeling something sweet, I'll stop at the Poseidon Bakery, one of my new favorite places in the city. Bringing in baked goods to the theater seems to be a big thing with the Little Shop cast so I try to do my part.

Bare: how do you manage the incredible fans and quickly growing following? what helps ground you the most?

MM: I am so grateful for my fans. The fact that anyone would want to wait in the cold for 45 mins after a show for a picture and a signature is insane to me. I'm just a guy. I try to go on vocal rest and get through the line quickly because if I didn't, I would spend 10 mins talking to each person. My costar, Liz, has been the person who has helped ground me most in the beautiful chaos of theater fans.

Bare: are you hoping to make more permanent roots in NYC? what are your favorite parts about it?

MM: I am looking to move here soon! I think the best way to put it is I feel alive in NYC. I also think New Yorkers are seriously some of the kindest people I know. I find myself just filling my life up with good friends, conversation, food and art here.

Bare: fill in the blanks……

my dream meal and/or snack is? — a bueno bar. best thing ever.

next dream job would be? — to continue working alongside kind and inspiring people.

describe a dream partner? — someone to laugh with.

who are or what are your dreamiest inspirations and icons? — honestly? Neil Degrasse Tyson.
