the bare magazine: your extraordinary positive spirit and enthusiasm is contagious - it brings out good things in those around you! does it come naturally? do you think it's been helpful to your success?
Sarah Lampert: First off thank you! That's so kind. I had so much fun on our shoot, especially balancing on the toilet to get closer to that pink ceiling light! Love a creative shot.
I’m super close with my family, and my spirit and enthusiasm stems from them. The running joke is that you can't let the family know when you like something. Once as a teenager I picked out a purple throw blanket for my bed. My mom decided that meant purple was my favorite color, so one day I came home and my entire room was painted purple. The news of purple being my favorite color spread through the family and after that, every gift was purple. I had a purple desk lamp, purple chair, purple throw rugs, and my grandparents even got me a framed poem entitled "I Love Purple”. And truth be told, I don’t really like the color purple. I just liked that one blanket. But that’s an example of the kind of support and enthusiasm I was raised with. And I’m really grateful for it. My family is the reason I’m here. Whenever I doubt myself, I have this wonderful support system that keeps propping me up.
Because I grew up with that level of enthusiasm, it's definitely something I try and bring to others and to everything I do. Because passion is a gift you want to share and to give and be generous with. And why do something if you're not passionate about it? What's the point?
bare: what would you say to those who haven't tuned into ginny and georgia? what are they missing?
SL: A wild ride. With a lot of heart. And some truly spectacular performances.
bare: fill us in on what you were doing prior to ginny/georgia
SL: I was an assistant in Hollywood, and Ginny & Georgia was actually the first pitch I ever did! I came up through being an assistant in reality TV development mostly, so I had sat in on many, many pitches because I had some wonderful bosses who included me –but I had never done a pitch myself before this show.
I’ve had a lot of the classic “coming up in the Hollywood assistant world” stories. Once, my job on set was to hold an umbrella over the host of a game show because we were filming in a parking lot and didn’t want her to get too much sun. So whenever they needed shade, they’d scream “UMBRELLA!” and I’d come running in. Another time, I got to drive Hulk Hogan around.
bare: what or who inspired you on the daily ...what pumps your creative juices most?
SL: My family, my friends, other TV shows, and books. I get a lot of inspiration from reality TV because you really get to experience interpersonal relationships ebbing and flowing in a raw and human way. I’m also very ignited by my coworkers, both the other writers and the actors. The actors on our show make such compelling and surprising choices that they inspire the writers in the room, and by season four, it’s really become this back-and-forth synergy where we are constantly evolving and challenging the creative direction of the show together.
bare: what are you most excited for viewers to get out of season 3?
SL: I want the show to continue to surprise them. The show has so many talented people working on it, and I think the reason it works is that it provides space for all these artists to come together, take risks, and be brave in the storytelling–in the writing, the acting, the crew, the music, every aspect of it. The reason fans relate to it is that they feel the beating hearts of everyone who works on this show coming forward out of the screen and making the characters feel real. But also, it’s meant to be entertaining! I love when people watch the show and come out of it like, “What the HELL did I just watch?!”
bare: describe your favorite escape from work? how do you recharge?
SL: To recharge I like to let loose a little. Any adventure I can convince my friends to join me in. I love a little bit of chaos. Or sometimes if the world is a bit too scary I need a retreat to Maine to see my family. A walk on the beach with my dog, Jax. Below Deck, Summer House, Survivor, The Traitors. A dirty martini. A nap.
bare: your hair is glorious! is it a big confidence booster for you? do you have certain products you rely on?
SL: Thank you! Hair is so fun because there's so much you can do with it. Mine’s been blonde, brown, black, red, pink. Once, I cut it all off with kitchen scissors during the pandemic. I also love wigs and have a whole suitcase full of different ones in my closet. I think changing your hair is the easiest way to change your whole look. Right now, mine is big and wild and the longest it’s ever been. I’m kind of playing a game with myself to see how long it can grow. My grandmother is not in support of this game and thinks I need a haircut.
bare: we spotlight your personal style in our photos... how has it evolved? what are some favorite brands or shops?
SL: I love putting together a look. Growing up, I always loved thrifting and finding strange items, then pairing them in ways that toe the line between ugly and cute. If something has fringe, I’m buying it. A purse that's also a working clock? Say less. Jeans with eyes on the butt pocket? Perfect.
There are a few staples I think everyone should own: a leather jacket that you kind of drown in, ankle boots with a small block heel that go with everything, sunglasses that are too big for your face – I know the trend right now is tiny, thin sunglasses but I like the massive ones, a blazer that isn’t black or blue, and a special piece of jewelry that has meaning attached to it that makes you feel like you have a little bit of magic to help get you through the day.
As for what I’m wearing right now, I’m very into barrel jeans. I even own some barrel overalls. I also love the Rag & Bone sweatpants jeans. Because sweatpants. And I recently bought my very first designer bag–I found this excellent white Balenciaga when I was in New York at a thrift store, and I feel very cool wearing it. It says BALENCIAGA in very bold letters across the bag, so it’s hard to miss. I’m also obsessed with a Betsey Johnson purse I just got, which has a red sparkly glitter phone as the handle that actually detaches and can be used as a Bluetooth phone! So as you can tell, my style is very classic, understated, modern chic.
