August Maturo/guys w curls

August Maturo is a young star on the rise with a mane of natural curls we couldn’t wait to get some info on. He is our inspiration to include #guyswcurls to go alongside #girlswcurls. He sports some great polished nails from time to time and believes if a guy or gal would feel happier covering a blemish with some makeup then do it! Check out August’s talents shine in his guest starring roles on the hit shows “9-1-1” and Fox’s crime anthology “Accused.” Scroll on down and find out what he does to keep his curls popping and our curiosity peaked.

The Bare Magazine: After seeing your curls we decided we had to include guys in addition to our #girlswcurls - yours are amazing! Do you get them from your mom or dad?

August Maturo: Thank you, I’m honored to be included! I actually get my curls from both sides, although my dad doesn’t have much hair left, haha, and my mom blows hers out. I’m lucky my mom grew up with curly hair, because she taught me how to do mine.

Bare: Have most of the characters you've played worn curly hair....have you ever had to straighten it?

AM: Yes, for the most part it’s just my natural hair for my roles. In my film ‘Shepherd’ it was a Holocaust film, so all my hair got cut off. Then luckily my super short hair worked for my next role in ‘The Nun’. When I booked a recent role in “Accused”, at first, the director wanted to straighten my hair to match my on-screen brother, but then he changed his mind. They did cut it much shorter though.

Bare: Was there ever a time when you wished for straighter hair?

AM: Not really, but there was a time in middle school where all the boys in my class had short buzzed hair, and I kind of wished I could do the same, but my hair just doesn’t look right that way. Now that I’m older it seems like everyone’s hair looks like mine, which is ironic. I guess I’m finally in style, haha.

Bare: How often do you wash your hair? Do you ever use a diffuser?

AM: The problem with curly hair, it only looks great on the first day you wash it, so how often I wash it depends on my schedule. If I’m working I have to wash it every morning. On my down time, I wash it way less. I do use a diffuser if I don’t have time to air dry it, which is the best way to dry my hair to keep the curls defined.

Bare: Do you have a certain person who cuts it? Do they cut it wet or dry?

AM: The only person I let cut my hair is Laurie Heaps, and she cuts it wet. She has been cutting my hair for 10 years, ever since I was on “Girl Meets World” Anytime I’ve tried to use someone else, it just doesn’t look right. She has magic hands.

Bare: We love that you are into painting your nails and wearing a bit of makeup in real life. Do you think that it's getting much more acceptable for all genders?

AM: I honestly don’t care if it’s acceptable, or trendy, I just do what makes me feel happy. I love art in all forms, whether it’s music, acting, writing, or drawing. Art is about expressing yourself, and I think that using yourself as a canvas is another way of doing that. And sometimes it’s just about covering a pimple. I think people should do whatever makes them feel more confident, regardless of gender. But I would say yes, my generation is much more accepting, which is a good thing.

Bare: You've had some challenging issues with food allergies. Has it been rewarding helping others with their issues?

AM: Yes, I’ve suffered with life-threatening food allergies my whole life. Helping other people like me feel a little less alone is the most rewarding part of my life. I’m not a huge fan of social media, but I’ll always keep my accounts active so that I could use it to draw attention to food allergies and hopefully help others with my condition.

Bare: How has your style evolved? How would you describe it?

AM: I would say growing up as an actor and always having to be in wardrobe, has made me love it when I’m not. Not sure that’s a style, but I love to be comfortable. My favorite clothes are sweats, but I love designer clothes. Give me a Gucci tracksuit and I’m happy.
