the bare magazine: what was it like working alongside such a stellar cast for a merry little ex-mas? do you feel it helps you grow as an artist?

Emily Hall: Oh my gosh, working alongside this cast was such a dream. Every actor brought something distinct, and yet there was this overall effortless sense of play and timing that made every day on set so much fun. They’re all so good comedically just with their instincts, their improv, their listening, that just being around them felt like a masterclass. I hadn’t ever done a project like this before, so I wanted to make sure I was really open to everything. I really challenged myself to slow down, listen, and trust my instincts more on this project by watching everybody else. So, yes, it absolutely helped me grow as an artist and inspired me to step outside my comfort zone in ways I hadn’t before.

bare: what can audiences look forward to about this Christmas story that makes it unique?

EH: This movie has heart and humor. I think some Christmas movies focus way more on the heart, but this one has such a unique style of humor, it’s really special. Steve Carr, our director, allowed for a lot of improvisation, which, honestly, was the biggest gift.

bare: when did the acting bug bite? are you passionate about any other creative endeavors that grab your time as well?

EH: The acting bug bit me right before COVID, actually. I was modeling in NY, and felt rather unfulfilled, and a friend of mine suggested I take an improv class and right after that I moved to LA. I never wanted to as a kid… I loved performing for my family, but had terrible stage fright. I actually still do! Ha! And yes, actually. I have also been writing a lot and have a couple of scripts under my belt, as well as a proof of concept that I shot in WA this summer. I also love to play guitar and sing; it’s always been such a wonderful outlet.

bare: compare and contrast a smaller passion project indie film, and a big movie experience ... Are you planning to balance the two types of projects when possible? What might be an upcoming dream genre or project?

EH: Yeah, there is such a difference, and there isn’t at the same time. Obviously, budget is a big one, so the days on a bigger project aren’t as jam-packed. But at the same time, I think that if I can get behind the story I’m telling or if it challenges me, I’m in, regardless of the project type. I would love to be able to balance these films for sure and I never want to limit myself. That said, a dream next project would be something dark and grittier, maybe with a sharp sense of humor… something that lets me push boundaries and really dive into a character and explore their world.

bare: we had fun shooting at The Salter house you felt their designs were suited to your personal style....can you describe it? does NYC inspire you with fun shopping destinations and vintage outlets?

EH: Oh yes, absolutely. My style is constantly evolving, but I love mixing the prairie-girl sweetness with a bit of a tomboy edge.  Currently, I’m drawn to pieces that feel feminine yet lived-in, with vintage details. NYC definitely fuels so much creativity in terms of style for me. My favorite vintage stores are here, and I also just love to people-watch and subtly pull inspiration. It’s one of my favorite places for clothes because everyone dresses so unapologetically for themselves. You walk down the street and it’s like a moving mood board… I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone without style there.

bare: you are super into fitness and health ....what is a typical day of meals and workout routine consist. basically what are your go-to ways of staying healthy?

EH: I mean, listen, I love a Pilates class as much as the next girl. I wouldn’t say I have one strict routine, though. I just try to move my body every day in some way, whether it’s Pilates, walking, hiking, or horseback riding. Staying active helps my mind more than anything.

Food-wise, I really try to keep a good balance. I used to be pretty restrictive, but I realized that approach actually had negative effects on both my body and mindset. Now I listen to what my body’s craving and focus on balance rather than rules. And, of course, I make sure to drink as much water as I do coffee… which is saying something because I really love coffee.
