the bare magazine: what did you love about working and hanging with the cast of Landman? it seems like a great bunch! have you become good friends with the shows creator Taylor Sheridan since living in NY?
Guy Burnet: It is a great bunch. I’ve loved the writing, working with the director, and a genuinely cool crew of people. Loved building the relationship with Kayla. Mostly, I’ll cherish the late-night, beer-fueled, insane life-sharing stories with Billy Bob — we found out we were bizarrely similar in a lot of ways. Yes, Taylor’s a fucking cool guy - we’re mates now and usually meet when he pops into town.
bare: can you describe your character Charlie Newsom's personality and what kind of impact he has on the story?
GB: By trade Charlie’s a petroleum engineer, but at heart he’s an adventurer. He lives like every day might be his last. A risk taker - the kind of guy who ends up in wild situations because he can’t resist a challenge. Taylor actually told me early on that Charlie’s an Indiana Jones type, which made everything click.
bare: what keeps you so drawn into the craft of acting ...in what way does it fulfill you? are there certain artists who inspire you?
GB: Tough question, because there are days, plenty of them, where I’m not drawn to it at all. But it keeps pulling me back one way or another. You’re always waiting for that moment when the right thing comes along, the one that actually lets you show what you can do. When it’s good, it’s beyond fulfilling. And when it’s not… it can be a fucking nasty, brutal industry.
I get inspired by all kinds. Great filmmakers and actors of course — Sorrentino, Christian Bale, Frances McDormand, Daniel Day-Lewis, Sam Rockwell. But I’m equally inspired by people in completely different worlds: professional athletes, boxers, MMA fighters, my mum, and people who grind minute to minute just to get through life. That kind of resilience speaks to me more than anything. I get the most from connecting with people like that.
bare: can you share thoughts on some of your side passions...boxing/fitness, clothing and shoe design?
GB: Boxing has always been a constant for me. From when I lived in Liverpool to everywhere else I’ve ended up in the world, it’s the community I cherish. It has so many parallels to prepping for roles — the dedication, the hard work, and then having to let go of all of it once you’re “in the ring,” so to speak.
Beyond that, I love designing clothes or hunting for cool pieces. The shoes in the photos I actually created with my friend Emi at Repetto in Paris. And honestly, If not for work, I travel mostly for good food/wine and to watch my football team play.
bare: you have lived all over! what do you miss most about living in Paris, London and LA? what are you loving about NYC?
GB: Yeah, I’m really fortunate to have moved around a fair bit. I’ve loved everywhere I’ve spent real time — each place had its own moment that matched whatever stage of life I was in. From Liverpool to Marseille to different parts of the States, it’s all been great in its own way — the food, the architecture, the people.
But I love New York. I feel lucky to live here. The energy suits me - the pace, the honesty of the city, the feeling that something’s always happening - and it’s nice having easier access to Europe than from the West Coast.
