Holly Taylor

We had the pleasure of catching up with “The Americans” alumna Holly Taylor recently in Brooklyn. Currently, you can catch this glimmering talent starring as Angelina in season three of the NBC drama Manifest. The newly brunette haired beauty gave us the scoop on embracing what you have naturally, her bare essentials, thoughts on Keri Russell and the best words of wisdom she’s received.

The Bare Magazine: What is the look and vibe of your character Angelina in Manifest?

Holly Taylor: Angelina is very conservative and old fashioned so her style is pretty different from mine. She hasn't had the time or space to learn who she is as an individual or explore her own style. In the beginning of the season she wears some turtlenecks, floral button-ups, cardigans, and ill-fitting jeans ... all at the same time. At least I was warm! My hair also goes through a few changes this season, but it starts out similar to my natural color with a long, blunt cut. I was so desperate to get layers back in my hair.

Bare: Has having darker hair for the role been an adjustment in your real life?

HT: It's definitely been an adjustment, but the dark hair is growing on me (no pun intended); it feels a little more mature and moody. I'm very very pale so I've always been scared of darker hair, especially with my winter skin. I've been relying on blush to add some color to my face and make me look alive. I also love a face tan every now and then to even out my skin tone and add some color. I'll use Bondi Sands dark foam, Bali Body face tan water, or Isle of Paradise drops.

Bare: Does your skincare regimen change while filming? What are your essential products on and off set?

HT: While filming, I'm extra mindful about removing my makeup at the end of the day. So this season I've been using Farmacy's Green Clean balm to remove makeup, and then double cleansing with my usual routine of Suzanne Somers' Organic daily cleanser, followed by her Calming Toner and Bioactive Moisturizer. If my skin needs some more moisture I'll use Farmacy's Honeymoon Glow night serum or just coconut oil.

Bare: Who are some of your favorite beauty and style icons and why?

HT: Keri Russell (of course), Matilda Djerf, Jennifer Aniston, Rihanna. They all look so effortlessly cool and confident because they embrace their own personal style. I love that they all can keep it low-key and natural, or go full glam. I also find so much beauty & style inspo from TikTok; it really has become an educational app for me, haha.

Bare: How did you stay active and in shape during quarantine? Were there any regular routines you got into to help with stress as well?

HT: I used to go to a boxing gym, but it closed due to Covid, so I started following old Taebo and Callanetics videos on Youtube with my mom and they really worked! I'm also a dancer, so I'll take some classes online here and there. If I'm stressed, I'll do a stretching yoga flow, take a hot bath with lavender epsom salts, listen to music, and remind myself to breathe because I go surprisingly long without doing that.

Bare: Has your mom handed down any great pearls of wisdom about taking care of yourself, or any beauty tips?

HT: Most of my life my mom never wore makeup, so I didn't learn any tips there, but she has taught me how to embrace what you have naturally. We're both big fans of minimal effort: less makeup, more pajamas. We've also both had breast cancer scares and it's in the family, so my mom did a ton of research to find us the cleanest skincare products that won't harm our bodies; I hardly use anything else. Lastly: moisturize, moisturize, moisturize (specifically with cocoa butter)!

Bare: How about your on-screen “The Americans” mom Keri Russell? Was her natural beauty and confidence an inspiration? Did you swipe any beauty know how from her in the makeup trailer?

HT: The thing that inspired me the most about Keri was how kind she was to every single person on set. She is naturally beautiful inside and out. What I remember most from being in the makeup trailer with her is her emphasis on looking natural and real. If her character was just waking up, she wanted to really look like she was just waking up and not have a perfect winged eyeliner and lipstick. It's easy to get caught up in your looks when your face is being immortalized on a big screen, so it was really nice to grow up watching someone be so free and confident.

Bare: What are your Bare essentials...?

HT: My Suzanne Organic skincare, a cream blush (Lauren Conrad, Tarte, or Ogee!), rose lip salve, MAC or Charlotte Tilbury lip liner, and chocolate. I never go anywhere without an emergency supply of chocolate in my bag.
