Lucy Freyer

Lucy Freyer is a busy rising star between doing 8 shows a week in the off-broadway hit “The Wanderers” (closing April 2nd) and flying off to LA for the premiere of her film “Paint” with Owen Wilson (in theatres April 7th). We met up with her at her pad before she headed the theatre where we took some snaps of Lucy and her incomparable costar Katie Holmes. Scroll down check our photo diary and her words on her character, creating the perfect cat eye and tussled blonde chop, what she loves about Katie Holmes, vintage finds and her bare essentials.

The Bare Magazine: Is the time you spend in your dressing room putting makeup on and your brunette wig...when you feel your character Esther comes to life? What do you love about her?

Lucy Freyer: For a while it was. The first time you put on a costume and a wig, it feels like the final piece of the puzzle in building a character. For the first few previews, all it took was looking at my vastly different reflection to feel like I was dropped into the world of the play. But as I got more used to seeing myself as Esther, Dave, who plays my on-stage husband, and I built a pre-show ritual in which he would put on my wedding ring on for me. The first scene we have together takes place the night of our wedding, so it’s lovely to have the moment right before the play starts actually happen every night, and it’s quite sweet for it to be for just us.

Bare: In real life you have the best blonde chop! Where do you get your hair done and what products give it that perfect texture?

LF: I get my hair done at Pearlita downtown. Halie cuts my hair and, honestly, she’s become the only person I trust to cut it, she’s amazing. Her Instagram is @hairbyhalieK

Bare: Tell us a bit about your cool vintage style and aesthetic? Have you been into thrifting for a while? Do you shop mostly online?

LF: I think the older I’ve gotten the more cultivating my own style, as opposed to following trend cycles, interests me. I really love vintage clothes. I love that they’ve had a whole life and been lived in before I get my hands on them. I love when things are a little weird and off-beat. And I also LOVE that it’s better on the environment. I shop a lot at Stella Dallas in Brooklyn and Red Vintage Co - they have the best and weirdest vintage T’s.

Bare: Can you share any self-care rituals that help you recharge and refresh after a long week on stage?

LF: For me, my Monday nights, the only night we have off, have become really precious during this run. Every Monday night, I’ve gone to my friends apartment with a few other friends and we’ve ordered takeout and watched a feel good movie from the early 2000s.

Bare: For your daily real life makeup we watched as you created the perfect cat-eye! What pencil do you use? Any tips on doing it so perfectly?!

LF: I’ve used the Stila liquid eyeliner since I was about 17! And honestly, I think you caught me on a good day, usually it takes me a couple of attempts to get it just right! I think the key is to elongate your eye, so start the wing earlier than maybe you think you should, so your eye doesn’t look droopy.

Bare: You and your costar Katie Holmes have such a wonderful chemistry! Would you share the top 3 qualities you love about her? And how has she inspired you?

LF: I love Katie. She’s so funny, generous and doesn’t take herself too seriously. I think most importantly though, she just loves the work - that’s definitely the most inspiring thing about her.
