Tiera Skovbye

What’s not to love about a good rodeo dynasty? Nothing! And we’ve got a new one to recommend: The Hallmark channel’s “Ride,” which stars our April digital cover beauty Tiera Skovbye. In Ride Tiera (who has been acting since she was 10) stars as widowed former rodeo queen Missy McFlurrey. The show is chock-full of the twists and turns that take place as a family tries to keep its beloved ranch afloat. Whoa! But our girl handles it all with grace, and says she was inspired by her character’s strength, resilience — and custom-made cowboy hat. Scroll down to see Tiera channel some Bardot vibes and read our chat about all things skincare, makeup, style, mental health, self-care and Bare essentials, natch.

The Bare Magazine: What did you love about stepping into your character Missy in “Ride”? What inspired you about her?

Tiera Skovbye: I loved a lot of things about Missy! She is a very complex person, who is dealing with so many things, all at once. As an actor, it’s always a treat to have so many things to work with. Missy is on this journey of self-discovery and figuring out who she is and what she wants out of life, and she does it all while taking care of the family around her. I am super inspired by her strength and resilience.

Bare: Can you share the western wear costume process for the show? Was it all custom made? Are you loving the resurgence of country western style in fashion??

TS: The clothes on the show are absolutely incredible. We had an amazing wardrobe team who produced some beautiful custom-made pieces for the show and put together some really fun outfits. Cowboy hats are a big deal in this world and I was lucky enough to get to design two beautiful custom-made hats that I get to wear throughout the show. I think my character had about eight different pairs of cowboy boots that I wore throughout the season!

Bare: On your recent trip to NYC, did you find some time for any favorite indulgences? Food, shopping, beauty treatments ... a power walk?

TS: My trip to NYC was a whirlwind, but I was able to do some fun things! My sister Ali Skovbye was with me, and we got to fit in a little bit of shopping and a comedy show. We went to see the broadway show “Some Like it Hot,” which was really fun. We explored a bit of night life, and of course tried to eat as much good food as possible!

Bare: Do feel taking time for your mental health and internal balance contributes to your external glow? What do you usually do to help support yourself and others?

TS: I for sure think that the work we do on our mental well-being is an essential part of our overall health and the way we show up in the world. My mental health has been an ongoing journey for sure, one of lots of ups and downs, but one I am always committed too. For me, some things that are essential are therapy, journaling, exercise (this is a big one), being outside in nature, and leaning on my support system. I think one of the biggest things I’ve learned recently is things are easier when you share the load. It can feel super overwhelming and scary at times to let people into your struggles but whether it’s a therapist, a family member or a friend, letting out your thoughts and feelings can help take away their power and provide clarity. Having a routine is also so helpful, finding the things that make you feel safe and balanced are hugely important. Also animals. If you have a chance to hug an animal … DO IT.

Bare: Tell us about your interest in Martial Arts...do you try to go to classes?

TS: I started doing karate when I was younger, my parents put me in it for self defense. These days I train more in Mauy Thai and Brazilian Jujitsu. I train at a gym in Vancouver that I love and try to go to classes as often as possible when I’m in town. For me its such a great workout, both mentally and physically, and I absolutely love it!

Bare: On our shoot, did you enjoy sporting a smokey eye? What do you usually do for your everyday makeup?

TS: I LOVED the smokey eye look, it was so fun! My normal day to day make up is MUCH simpler ... if I’m even wearing any make up at all. I tend to try to give my skin a break when I can and stick to simple basic makeup. Eyebrows, eye lashes and cheeks.
