the bare magazine: in what way has being a part of the Stranger Things project changed your life?
Cara Buono: It’s given me this beautiful, unexpected second act. People stop me on the street to tell me how much the show means to them or how it brought their family together — that’s rare and special. I’ve also loved watching the kids grow up into these creative, thoughtful adults.
bare: what messages inspire you the most about the Stranger Things story?
CB: At its heart, it’s about friendship, loyalty, and facing fear — all through this wild, nostalgic lens. I love that it celebrates the power of being an outsider.
bare: can you describe in what way the bonds you've developed with the cast are so special.
CB: There’s such a genuine family feel to this cast. I adore the kids — I’ve loved watching them grow up into these kind, creative, wonderful humans. We’ve all been part of something that we realize is special, and that creates a kind of bond you don’t take for granted.
bare: we had so much fun shooting in Brooklyn... enhancing your personal style. How would you describe it? do you have favorite shopping outlets or designers?
CB: Yes! Lately I really want to experience as much beauty as possible — especially in the context of the world right now. I’ve been feeling that with fashion, too, while also being in this transition with how I approach it. Some days I want to dress like I’m stepping onto a red carpet, other days it’s jeans and a Blondie tee. It’s a feeling thing — I like clothes that have character, that feel alive. I love the structure and wit of Thom Browne, the quiet confidence of The Row, and the modern femininity of Khaite. Even COS — I love how simple and architectural their pieces can be. But whatever it is, it has to be comfortable. I just want to feel good in what I’m wearing. Put-together, not put-upon.
bare: your LA Stranger Things premiere dress was a divine creation in red! who made it and how did it make you feel?
CB: I’ve loved Ashi’s work for so long, and a friend introduced us. We talked about creating something that felt like a real moment. His designs have this incredible architectural quality; they’re bold but still full of emotion, like you’re stepping into a story. This red look felt perfect for the Stranger Things world — powerful and feminine, echoing the intensity and mythology of the show without ever being literal.
bare: your skin is so luminous and naturally beautiful — can you share a few of your tips or products you rely on?
CB: Thank you! I’ve been taking care of my skin since I was a teen thanks to my mom. And her good genes! I use trentinoin, Vitamin C, some different oils. I like really rich moisturizers. My skin can handle it. I also started using a cream that contains estriol and I’ve seen the biggest change with that! And sunscreen every day - face and neck!
bare: what is a close second to acting in terms of a creative outlet or passion that you love to dive into?
CB: Writing — it’s where I process everything. I’m working on a book right now, and it’s been one of the most meaningful and creatively energizing things I’ve ever done. I’ve also been developing something in the tech space that reimagines how we give and connect — it’s another form of storytelling, just through a different medium.
bare: do you have a dream project you'd love to be a part of? directing? or particular genre that intrigues you?
CB: I recently worked with Jesse Eisenberg and would love to work with him again — he’s such an intuitive, generous storyteller. I’m drawn to projects that feel human and a little off-center, where there’s humor and heartbreak living side by side. But I’d also love to do a big action-adventure or sci-fi project — something physical and cinematic that still has real emotion underneath it.
